Exquisite Portugal: From Lisbon to Duoro Valley

We just returned from a captivating journey through Portugal, where wine, culture, and culinary delights intertwine! Each destination has unique charm and allure, from Lisbon's vibrant streets to the Duoro Valley's tranquil landscapes. Here's a glimpse into our tour of Portugal!

Lisbon: A Blend of Elegance and Culture

Our adventure began in the charming city of Lisbon, where we stayed at the newly opened Palácio Ludovice. This former palace of a famous architect survived the Great Earthquake of 1755 and was completely renovated and reopened in 2022.  We loved the friendly staff who provided not only five-star service but were always happy to assist us. This ideally located city retreat set the tone for our Lisbon exploration.

Lisbon’s tile

We started our visit with a private introductory tour, immersing ourselves in the city's rich history and vibrant culture. Lisbon is a beautiful city known for their gorgeous tile, which is everywhere - even on the buildings and sidewalks!  Another highlight was our visit to the tile museum, where we marveled at the intricate artistry of famous Portuguese artists. For a hands-on experience, you could create your own custom tiles at a local factory – a memory to cherish!

Pastéis de Nata

The food is very seafood-focused, and we found it fresh, creative, and elevated.  Portugal is famous for its Pastéis de Nata, a crispy pastry filled with delicious custard.  They are sold all around Portugal, but trying them at Manteigaria, Fábrica de Pastéis de Nata is a MUST!

Tagus River

One of our most captivating moments was a relaxing, private sunset sail on the Tagus River.  Our captain, Pedro, pointed out all the iconic sites as the city's skyline was bathed in the warm hues of the setting sun. We sipped Rosé as Lisbon's evening fell and the lights twinkled, painting a picture that captured the city's essence.

Sintra

Sintra and Cascais: A Day of Enchantment

A day trip to Sintra and Cascais added another layer of magic to the adventure. Sintra's fairytale-like castles and lush landscapes were awe-inspiring. The intricate details of Palácio Nacional de Sintra and the colorful Pena Palace were like stepping into a storybook. In Cascais, the coastal charm and relaxed vibes welcomed us as we explored the quaint streets and enjoyed the fresh sea breeze.

Luza Portugal

Shopping Delights and Treasures

A free day in Lisbon gave us the chance to indulge in some retail therapy. Leitao & Irmaeo offered a captivating collection of jewelry that left us spoiled for choice. Coracao, with its selection of Portuguese wool products, was a cozy haven of warmth and style. And Luza's authentic pottery and souvenirs are perfect keepsakes of memorable travels.

Porto: A Gastronomic and Cultural Feast

Óbidos

En route to Porto, we stopped at the ancient town of Óbidos, where narrow streets whispered tales of history. We meandered through these charming lanes and tasting Ginja, the delectable cherry liquor served in dark chocolate cups, added a touch of indulgence to our experience.

Continuing, a stop in Nazarré, famous for its awe-inspiring giant waves during the winter surf season, allowed us to try delectable Seafood Rice. This is not to be missed.

Arriving in Porto, we stayed at the elegant Le Monumental. The hotel's blend of contemporary design and historic elements offered a comfortable retreat in the heart of the city. Made up of 63 rooms and 13 suites – decorated in 1920s neoclassical design– the hotel is a majestic home away from home.

Bolhāo Market

We embarked on a walking food tour that unveiled the city's history, recent rejuvenation, and captivating food culture. The tour introduced us to a delectable array of cheeses, charcuterie, and wines showcasing Portuguese culinary craftsmanship's essence.

A visit to the renowned Bolhão market was a sensory delight, where we sampled various types of canned fish that surprised us. The experience highlighted the authenticity of Porto's food scene.

As we walked the Dom Luis I Bridge from Porto to Gaia, we admired the panoramic views that stretched across the Douro River. The intricate architecture of the São Francisco Church and the charm of Flowers Street captured the city's vibe.

Our time in Porto was a delightful blend of exploration and relaxation, savoring the local culinary delights – including the famous Port wine (which is made in Duoro!)

Quinta Nova Views

Duoro Valley: Tranquil Luxury

Transitioning to the Duoro Valley, we opted for a private driver, a wise choice given that the winding roads can be quite an adventure!  Quinta Nova greeted us with its 11-room boutique property, a serene sanctuary where relaxation by the pool was complemented by wine, cheese, and the unhurried pace of life.

Our stay was a true escape from the every day, and dining at Quinta Nova's restaurant became a cherished ritual. The culinary journey mirrored the beauty of the surroundings.

Quinta Nova Pool

Our days in the Duoro Valley were a blend of relaxation and adventure. We learned about the local wine-making process at a few regional vineyards (including actual foot stomping at Quinta di Foz!) and indulged in exquisite wine tastings. A standout meal was our wine-pairing lunch at Quinta Portal, where the outstanding food elevated the region's essence. The culinary scene in the Duoro Valley left an indelible mark on our memories.

The tranquil surroundings and the charming Quinta Nova made it a truly rejuvenating experience.

Portugal's Endearing Charm

Our voyage through the country, from the elegance of Palácio Ludovice to the serenity of Quinta Nova, was a tapestry of luxury, culture, and natural beauty. Each city we visited had its unique charm, leaving us with cherished memories that forever hold a special place in our hearts. Portugal was a surprise that exceeded our expectations and a place that has something for everyone!

The Azores

There are still so many places to see that we will cover on our next visit, like the adventurous, gorgeous islands of the Azores, the sunny beachside towns of the Algarve and Alentejo, the Southern wine region of Portugal!
